Introduction
Graduated students will have competence on master degree level in technology. They will have a basic background in mathematical science and basic engineering subjects and be able to apply this knowledge within an area of specialisation. As the study program consists of and rests on general principles and methods, they will also be able to meet and solve challenges on an advanced engineering level outside the area of specialisation and in close cooperation with experts from other fields. In particular, the candidates will be qualified to participate and manage developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles for the offshore petroleum industry above seabed.
PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION
Consisting of a total of 120 ECTS, the master program is made up of 20 ECTS basic methods courses (G) which consolidate and continue the mathematical and scientific foundation from the bachelor program. 30 ECTS are common (core) subjects (F) which give the students a broad and common platform in offshore technology and they complement and expand subjects from the bachelor program as well. The remaining 70 ECTS consist of 30 ECTS of compulsory basic (core) courses (K), 10 ECTS of elective concentration courses (S) and a final master thesis of 30 ECTS (M). The electives must be approved by the department, but the students will have considerable freedom in choosing their own combinations depending on interest and level of knowledge. The master thesis may be taken either at the faculty or
in cooperation with industry. The department has good contacts with offshore companies in the region. In order to be assigned a topic for a master paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Master's thesis.
The program provides specialization within MARINE-AND SUBSEA TECHNOLOGY which is devoted to systems and operations in subsea field developments. The program combines basic mechanical engineering subjects with marine technology and knowledge of systems and operations related to installation, operation and maintenance. Design of Subsea Poduction Systems, Modern Well Design are examples of central electives.
UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of
the courses will necessarily have to change over time because of professional development, use of new technology and general social change.
The course work consists of lectures, project assignments, obligatory and voluntary exercises and laboratory work. The course descriptions provide further information on:
- Class work and instruction
- Set texts
- Evaluation
- Exams

Hva kan du bli?
A master's degree in offshore technology gives you competence in high demand in a variety of activities related to the offshore industry. Offshore structural engineering is central in connection with the upgrading of existing offshore structures and the design and building of new smaller or larger structures. Marine and subsea technology are growth industries today. In Norway half of the petroleum produced comes from subsea installations and Norwegian companies are key players in all international markets for subsea and deep water technologies. The offshore activity off the Norwegian coast and in the arctic regions is expected to grow in the years to come.Emneevaluering
