Content
The first part of the course will give and introduction on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, how DNA and chromosomes are build, gene expression, cell division and communication. Furthermore, the course presents selected topics on organelle development and division, metabolic compartmentation, circadian rhythms, peroxisomal functions in different cells, DNA-repair.
Important aspects which will be covered are:
- Structure and function of biomolecules
- The build-up and structure of cells, primarily eukaryotic cells
- The functioning of the different cellular structures/organelles
- Structur and function of biological membranes
- Metabolism and photosynthesis
- How cells communicate
- Control of cell division, cell cycle and cell death
- Transcription and protein synthesis (translation)
- Cell culture techniques
Learning outcome
After completing this course students should be able to:
- Describe the building blocks of different cell types
- Understand how genes are expressed
- Describe how cells divide and communicate
- Understand different cell biological laboratory techniques
