Content

The course/lectures will present the cell biology of mainly prokaryotic microorganisms, their biochemistry/metabolism, molecular genetics, systematics and ecology. The laboratory course will teach basic methods in microbiology.

Learning outcome

The students should know the different cell components and the structural, metabolic and phylogenetic diversity among prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms as well as the theories of their evolution. The course gives a molecular understanding of basic cellular processes as e.g. replication, transcription, translation, regulation, mutagenesis and transfer of genetic material between cells, and an introduction to microbiological and gene technological methods and microbial ecology. The students will gain an overview of basic virology and immunology.

Laboratory course

Electronic HSE-course must be completed and approved before access to the laboratory can be given.

Mandatory lab assignments are to be completed at the times and in the groups that are assigned and published. Absence due to illness or other reasons must be communicated as soon as possible to the laboratory personnel. One cannot expect that provisions for completion of the lab assignments at other times can be made, unless prior arrangements with the laboratory personnel have been agreed.

Failure to complete the assigned labs on time or not having them approved will result in barring from taking the final exam of the course.

Four hours lectures and four hours laboratory course lasting 6 weeks. Language of tuition is Norwegian.
