Content

The focus of this course is on the structure and function of proteins. You learn about biological, biochemical, and biophysical tools to investigate the structural and enzymatic properties of proteins. You use protein databases, and software to work with proteins in 3D. You work out the scientific concepts and principles with which you can investigate proteins and their biochemical reactions in an experiment. You learn to set up and work with laboratory protocols, create meaningful data, and interpret your results.

Learning outcome

Know how the structure and function of proteins are formed. Know how the structure and function of a protein can be analyzed. Know scientific concepts and principles applied in protein research. Know key instruments for protein analysis and how to apply them in daily laboratory work. Know which type of data are generated in an experiment and how to interpret the result.

Exam

Form of assessment Weight Duration Marks Aid
Written exam 2/3 4 Hours Letter grades Basic calculator specified in general exam regulations
Folder evaluation 1/3 Letter grades

The exam is digital and a combination of multiple choice questions and questions.

The folder consists of lab reports based on practical exercises in the laboratory. The lab reports must be submitted within one week of the last exercise, with any necessary corrections.

The course has an ongoing assessment. All parts must be passed to achieve an overall grade in the course. No re-sit opportunities are offered on the laboratory reports. If a student wishes to redo the lab, this can be done the next time the course is taught.

Laboratory training, Attendance

Four compulsory assignments, and one presentation must be completed and approved within given deadlines. All assignments must be approved by the teacher no later than three weeks before the exam in order to gain access to the exam.

1 day of lab exercises per week for a total of 5 weeks. Laboratory exercises must be completed at the given times and in the assigned groups as announced on Canvas. In case of valid absence due to illness or other reasons, you must notify the teacher/lab personnel as early as possible. In some cases it may be possible to do the lab assignments at a later date, but this must be agreed upon with the teachers and is not guaranteed.

Personal attendance is required for at least 80% of the lectures, which must be approved before the student is admitted to the exam

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
