Content

Introduction to different principles for measuring a selection of physical quantities.

Learning outcome

After taking this course, the student should be able to explain, and explain the principles behind, the following measurement methods:
  • measurement of heat transport (conduction, convection and radiation)
  • measuring temperature by contact thermometry (thermocouples, thermistors, etc.) and radiation thermometry, and explain how the temperature scale is defined
  • measurement / analysis of gas by IR gas measurement
  • measurement of pressure, both in liquids and gases.
  • measurement of flow in both liquid and gas (displacement meters, pressure drop-based methods, electromagnetic meters and the use of ultrasound, etc.
  • measurement of level with electromechanical devices for solids. pressure-based layer measurement in liquids with different liquid components.
  • measurement of position, speed and acceleration using e.g. code dials and accelerometer.
  • measurement of force and torque.
  • use of optical fibers for mechanical measurements (mechanical influence of the fiber) and as a light guide for transmitting information to e.g. position measurement.
