The course will provide methods for evaluating the effects of technological change and investments related to green change and thus a real basis for decision-making. The aim is to learn practical methods for performing technical-economic calculations related to renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction measures. The course will be project-oriented and will give students competence in performing analyzes in demand in industries and with the authorities related to green conversion.
Different climate measures involve costs. To compare different emission measures, the cost per reduced tonne of CO2 is calculated. This is called cost of action. The calculation requires insight into both the economic and technological aspects associated with various emission measures. The calculated cost of measures can be used to calculate the profitability of emission cuts, necessary support needed to implement a measure, or to compare the costs of different types of climate measures. The profitability of a climate measure will be illustrated by comparing the income from the measure, for example in the form of reduced payment of CO2 tax, with the calculated cost of the measure. The course will provide concrete examples of such calculations.
Renewable energy often requires large investments that are accompanied by relatively small operating costs. This will be illustrated with concrete examples in the course. In order to get an expression of the costs of different types of renewable energy, one must therefore look at the cost per unit of renewable energy over the life cycle. This is what is expressed by the life cycle cost. The profitability of investments in renewable energy is illustrated by the relationship between the income from the sale of renewable energy and the life cycle cost. The course will cover various elements that are included in profitability calculations for renewable energy. Examples are climate regulation, markets for renewable energy, price development and cost development.
