Content

The subject gives a deeper understanding for general chemistry, especially the basic areas like stokeometry, acid and bases, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, reaction rates and implementation in chemical thermodynamics (spontaneity). The lectures include introduction to the laboratory exercises. The subject includes laboratory exercises, 4 hours in 9 weeks. It will be given credits for laboratory presentations, reporting journal writing and obligatory exercise (analysis of unknown sample). The laboratory part counts 25% and the theory part counts 75% of the final evaluation. Rules for doing the exercises and evaluation are given to the students in the start of the semester.

Learning outcome

After ended course the student is able to:

- Do simple laboratory analyses

- General skills on laboratory

- write scientific reports

- know principles for solutions, solvent properties and reactions in water

- know principles in chemical thermodynamics

- know principles in electrochemistry

- know principles in chemical kinetics

After ended course the student will have achieved competence to proceed on courses with chemistry requirements.

Course teacher sets final mark. Written exam counts 75% and laboratory exercise 25%. The sum of these marks gives the final mark for the subject. In order to achieve a passed mark neither the lab and nor the theory must fail.

To get a pass mark in general chemistry one should get a pass mark both in laboratory evaluation and in theoretical exams. Pass mark in the lab evaluation is given on the basis of the student's laboratory portfolio that includes the following: The laboratory part counts 25% of the final marks.

The grade on the laboratory exercises is base on map evaluation which includes: reporting gives 25% of lab grade, skills at the lab gives 25% of lab grade, and analysis of unknown sample gives 50% of lab. Each part of these evaluations has to be passed.

Evaluation of the reports gives 25% of lab grade. Undocumented absence in 2 or more lab exercises, lack of 2 or more reports, will give non passed mark, and the lab course has to be retaken.

The skills at the lab give 25% of lab grade. Non-passed here will give non passed mark, and the lab course has to be retaken.

Analyses of unknown sample (obligatory exercise) gives 50% of lab grade. Non-passed here will give non passed mark, and the lab course has to be retaken. Rules for doing the exercises and evaluation are given to the students in the start of the semester.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

Compulsory course attendance that must be completed and approved before access to the laboratory: Electronic Course in Health, Safety and Environment.

Obligatory participation in all laboratory exercises: The laboratory exercises are a central part of this subject and are obligatory in order to achieve the goals for the course. The student has weekly 4 hours obligatory lab exercises for 9 weeks.

Method of work

5 hours lectures per week. 4 hours work with chemistry exercises on lab per week. Writing scientific laboratory reports. Calculation exercises after each chapter. Non-passed marks in the map evaluation will give non-passed mark in the laboratory part and for the complete course. Passed mark for the laboratory is therefore required in order to be allowed to participate in the theory exam. Mandatory work demands (such as hand in assignments, lab- assignments, projects, etc) must be approved by subject teacher three weeks ahead of examination date.

Åpent for

Because of limited laboratory capacity the course will, from autumn 2008, only be available for students admitted to a study program where the course is mandatory or as a recommended elective.

This according to § 3-7, point 5, within rules for Universities and University Colleges.

Students that do not have the course in their original study plan but wish to take this course have to apply to the Head of Department responsible for this course. Applications should be submitted following the guidelines for applications for admission to individual courses.

Emneevaluering

Evaluation through schems or oral communication according to the rules.

Litteratur

Selected chapters from "Chemistry", Brown, LeMay, Bursten og Murphy , 11 utgave , Pearson, 2009.

Curriculum is based, but on not limited to the book, in addition to all handouts, information given in lectures or on Its Learning.
