Covers methods for the development of a deep understanding of topics in mathematics through the use of classroom activities and digital resources, with guest lectures on real-world applications of mathematics.

This course covers methods for supporting the development of critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques that are necessary to obtain a deep understanding of concepts in mathematics. Emphasis is placed on gaining experience in the communication and dissemination of ideas and arguments in mathematics, in both oral and written forms.
The course consists of three components:
- The development and use of exciting and joyful classroom activities to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills in mathematics, through a process of inquisitive exploration, experimentation, and discovery.
- The development and use of digital resources in GeoGebra and Desmos to help students gain a deeper understanding of concepts in mathematics.
- A series of guest lectures by invited experts about real-world applications of mathematics that are of current and future importance to society.
Learning outcome
- have knowledge of and experience with a range of mathematical and processes of thought that are of essential importance in developing a deep understanding of topics in mathematics.
- be able to analyse and develop classroom and digital activities that support the development of mathematical methods of thought by others.
- gain experience in written and oral methods of communication of topics in mathematics, including critiquing and offering feedback to others.
- gain knowledge of a wide range of real-world applications of mathematics, thereby being able to make representations on the important role that mathematics plays within society.

Two project reports on suitable topics of the student's choice. The topics must be approved by the lecturer.
If a student fails the course she/he has to repeat the projects the next time the subject is lectured.

Attendance at a minimum of three quarters of the classroom activity sessions (9 sessions or more).
Attendance at a minimum of three quarters of the computer-based sessions (9 sessions or more).
Attendance at a minimum of three quarters of the guest lecture sessions (9 sessions or more).
Submission of draft version of project report.
Written peer feedback letter on draft version of another student's project report.
Presentation of draft version of project presentation.
Oral peer feedback on draft version of another student's project presentation.
Two oral presentations of material covered in the project reports.
