The course provides an introduction to instrumental analysis with main focus on atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy, UV/IR spectroscopy, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Learning outcome
The student will get a theoretical knowledge of the physical principles behind the measurements and construction of modern analytical instruments. With this knowledge the student should be able to apply modern instrumentation in work an research with knowledge and competence after a short practical training.
The student will get knowledge about atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy, UV/IR/ spectroscopy, Gas chromatography, Liquid chromatography (HPLC), Mass spectroscopy and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Both the practical part and the exam has to be passed to pass the course. practical work from previos year may be accepted. There will be a total grade composed 25% from the practical work and 75% from written exam.
Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering
Compulsory course attendance that must be completed and approved before access to the laboratory: Electronic Course in Health, Safety and Environment.
Completion of mandatory lab assignments are to be made at the times and in the groups that are assigned and published. Absence due to illness or for other reasons must be communicated as soon as possible to the laboratory personnel. One cannot expect that provisions for completion of the lab assignments at other times are made unless prior arrangements with the laboratory personnel have been agreed upon.Failure to complete the assigned labs on time or not having them approved will result in barring from taking the exam of the course.
