International Macroeconomics (MSB111)
This course considers economic theory, quantitative methods and empirical insights relevant for the analysis of key macroeconomic issues such as i) business cycles, ii) sustainable growth and management of national wealth, iii) macroeconomic policy and iv) international macroeconomics and trade. A particular feature of the course is its applied focus, highlighting the interaction between global macroeconomic developments, financial markets and the corporate sector.

- The decomposition of real GDP in trend and business cycles, impulse and propagation mechanisms
- Quantitative analysis of business cycles: Decomposition of cycles vs. trend (HP-filter), seasonal adjustments, trend forecasts
- Monetary policy and interest rate setting
- Fiscal policy
- Economic indicators
- Consumption and saving
- Aspects of economic growth, national wealth, sustainability and growth
- Capital mobility, current account dynamics, financial (im-)balances
- Aspects of international trade
- Fiscal policy and the management of petroleum wealth
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Upon completion of the course, students will have knowledge of:
- Relevant concepts, theories and empirics on major topics in modern macroeconomics such as business cycles, sustainable growth and national wealth, macroeconomic policy and international macroeconomics and trade.
- Critical reflections on how to apply the various theories and concepts to various macroeconomic questions relevant for policy makers as well as the corporate world.
Skills
After completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze macroeconomic questions based on relevant models and methods
- Collect and analyse macroeconomic data to evaluate model predictions and to obtain insights about macroeconomic developments.
- Discuss and present macroeconomic insights to a broad audience.
