Master Thesis (MSBMAS)

The master's thesis is a carefully crafted scholarly document which defines and explores a research question based on original ideas and arguments developed under the influence and inspiration of primary and / or secondary sources. The thesis should have a substantial research component and must be written under the guidance of an advisor. The thesis provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate expertise and represents a test of research independence and self-reliance within his or her field of specialization.

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • Understand how to define, present and pursue a topical research question within their own field of specialization
  • Understand how to develop and conduct a scholarly based work of research
  • Have gained a thorough understanding of theories and methods that can be used to address the chosen research question

Skills

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Search relevant sources for theories and data that can address the chosen research question
  • Review existing theories and empirical evidence
  • Organize, summarize and analyze data, present and discuss results
  • Write clearly about the chosen research question, discuss results and implications

Minimum 60 ECTS. All first-year courses must be passed.

Method of work

A total of three writing seminars (two in the fall semester, one in the spring semester) will be provided as guidance for:
  • Selecting and narrowing down the topic
  • Composing appropriate research questions
  • Evaluating appropriate research design 
  • Identifying relevant academic literature
  • Exploring the potential data sources
  • Seeking inputs from faculty members
  • Understanding the structures and expectations for academic writing
