Course

Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics for Industrial Processes (MSK600)

The course deals with computational analysis of fluid flow. The first part of the course deals with theory and numerical methods. In the second part the students work in groups of 2-3 with  a project where theory and computer software is applied on a practical problem.

Content

Characterization of flow: Boundary layers and flow with recirculation. Finite volume methods for handling of flow and heat transfer in one-, two- and three-dimensional geometry. Numerical handling of turbulence Steady and non-steady problems. Matrix inversion methods. Computer-based tutorials using the OpenFOAM CFD code

Learning outcome

The students should be able to understand and evaluate basic aspects of:
  • Numerical discretisation for the flow and transport equations.
  • Solution methods for the coupled flow and transport equations.
  • Modelling techniques for engineering flows.
  • Carry out, report and present CFD calculations using OpenFOAM.
