Content

The Bachelor Thesis consists of an independent project in which the students are to use the knowledge they have acquired during their years of study in order to solve a given problem. In addition to the thesis there will be given an organized introduction to Theory of Science explained througt a historical presentation the most important events in science and philosophy history. You will get to know many of the creative persons who has contributed with new knowledge of nature and how their discovery has changed our view of nature and our selves. The crative process as an assumption to generate new knowledge of nature will also be illustrated.

Learning outcome

- Gained experience in working independently with plans, solve and document a problem in mechanical engineering/materials science within a given period of time - Learn how a scientific report will be written. Be able to present and communicate an independent work written under the field's terminology and expressions. - Learn how to perform searches in relevant scientific databases to illuminate a problem - Knowledge of ethical standards for scientific publications. All use of litterature with importance to the work must be listed as references. References are a list of books, articles, reports etc... referred to in the report. It is important to point out which is your contribution and what is taken from sources. If the rendered text, for exemple, is an article the reader must be informed of this. Note your use of sources on an ongoing basis, it is often difficult to find them later. For further information please read the Faculty guidelines for writing the Bachelor Thesis. - Learn how to act as an useful and objective actor in the scientific debate both within the profession and in public rooms. - Learn to determine when a scientific dispute has the character of beeing a paradigmatic controversy and be able to handle further debates. - Be good defenders and role models for high ethical behavior in academic and other context

Method of work

Project work (accomplishment of the Bachelor Thesis) It is important for both the student and the advisor that a good cooperation routine is established during the execution of the project. This may e.g. take the form of regular meetings in which the student will present and discuss his/her work as it develops. Preferably the student should have written something that can form the basis of the conversation/discussion with the advisor. It is an advantage to start writing the thesis at the earliest possible stage. The organized introduction to the Theory of Science part will be given as concentrated lectures for 10 - 12 hours in the beginning of the semester. This course will forme the basis for a written essay of a self-elected theme.
