Offshore Field Development (OFF515)

This course gives an overview of the offshore industry and an introduction to methods and technologies relating to the development of offshore oil and gas fields. The course starts with the framework and the subsurface design basis and covers elements of marine technology, systems design, functionality and design of production facilities, platform concepts, subsea solutions, pipelines, cost estimation, principles for project execution, and assessment of uncertainty, economic analysis and decision criteria.

This is illustrated by examples from the Norwegian continental shelf and other areas where such activities take place.

Content

This course gives an overview of the offshore industry and an introduction to methods and technologies relating to the development of offshore oil and gas fields. This is illustrated by examples from the Norwegian continental shelf and other areas where such activities take place.

The following topics are covered: historical background and development, information relating to petroleum resources and production, definitions relating to exploration, reservoir characteristics, drilling and well technology, methods and technologies relating to field development, design basis, systems design, functionality and design of production facilities, platform concepts, subsea solutions, pipelines, estimation of capital expenditure and operating expenditure, principles for project execution, economic analysis, risk assessment and decision criteria.

The course consists of 20 modules. One text document and one presentation will be made available for each module via Canvas. The language is English.

Learning outcome

After the courses the student shall:

  • Understand the business drivers in the offshore oil and gas industry
  • Understand the importance of a value chain perspective
  • Understand the importance of multidiscipline work
  • Be aware of the variety of technical solutions that can be used
  • Be aware of limitations and feasibility issues of specific solutions
  • Understand that the suitability of specific solutions depends on the circumstances

The exam comprises three tasks based on documents made available on Canvas during the course. Each of the three tasks has the same weight.
