Course

Offshore Field Development (OFF516)

This course gives an overview of the offshore industry and an introduction to methods and technologies relating to the development of offshore oil and gas fields. The course starts with the framework and the subsurface design basis and covers elements of marine technology, systems design, functionality and design of production facilities, platform concepts, subsea solutions, pipelines, cost estimation, principles for project execution, and assessment of uncertainty, economic analysis and decision criteria.

There will also be more details into marine technology: Design parameters for marine structures (Wind, wave current, Stability of floating units, Mooring of floating units), Construction and installation of platforms, Different fixed and floating platform concepts (Design basis and functional requirements, Design principles, Dynamic behaviour, Platform selection).

This is illustrated by examples from the Norwegian continental shelf and other areas where such activities take place.

Content

This course gives an overview of the offshore industry and an introduction to methods and technologies relating to the development of offshore oil and gas fields. This is illustrated by examples from the Norwegian continental shelf and other areas where such activities take place.

The following topics are covered: historical background and development, information relating to petroleum resources and production, definitions relating to exploration, reservoir characteristics, drilling and well technology, methods and technologies relating to field development, design basis, systems design, functionality and design of production facilities, platform concepts, subsea solutions, pipelines, estimation of capital expenditure and operating expenditure, principles for project execution, economic analysis, risk assessment and decision criteria.

The course consists of 30 modules. One text document and one presentation will be made available for each module via Canvas. The language is English.
