Content

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th for the autumn semester.

The course considers the scenario development from leakage of combustible substances to the emergence and development of fire or explosion. Experiments related to ignition, fire and explosions are presented and visualized, some are shown on video. Topics that are considered are:

  • Examples of accidents and events.
  • Important terms such as flash point, flammability limits, minimum ignition energy, etc.
  • Explanation of the physics and chemistry related to leakages, dispersion, ignition, fire and explosion.
  • Descriptions of consequences related to accident scenarios.
  • Measures and barriers against accidents.
  • Simple analytical techniques.

Learning outcome

After completing this course the student will have

  • general competence concerning flammable gases and liquids and selected characteristics relevant for safety work
  • knowledge about phenomena like leak, dispersion, ignition, fire and explosion
  • skills related to performing simple consequence analyses for the events described above

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
