Content

The course starts with the principles of classical genetics in view of our present understanding about cell division and the organization of chromosomes. The structure and organization of genes and mechanisms for gene expression will be covered. The most central methods in molecular genetics will be introduced, followed by lessons about gene regulation, genetic variation and cell cycle control. Modern methods for large scale studies of genomes and gene expression will be presented. Furthermore, defined defects in a cell's control mechanisms will be used to illustrate how these defects can lead to disease, as for example cancer. Finally, basic methods in bioinformatics will be introduced and used to solve problems.

Learning outcome

  • Understand how genes are assembled and the mechanisms for gene expression.
  • Know the principles of central gene technological methods and methods to map genomes, genetic variation and gene expression.
  • Understand the mechanisms for gene regulation both in prokaryotes and in eukaryotes.
  • Know the regulation of the cell cycle in relation to the development of cancer.
  • Have basic knowledge about bioinformatics.
  • Use web-based bioinformatics tools to solve problems

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
