Content

This course provides an introduction to clinical psychology. This includes:

  • clinical psychological
  • science theory theories and models for how mental health problems develops, including factors for risk and resilience
  • diagnosis and investigation of mental disorders
  • interventions for mental illness
  • introduction to clinical screening tools, interview and tests

The course looks at psychopathology from both an individual perspective and a societal perspective. The students also work on the interpretation and understanding of research results as an evidence base for work with psychopathology and clinical interventions.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

On successful completion of this course, students will

  • have knowledge of clinical psychological issues related to development of mental health disorders, their assessment and relevant interventions
  • have knowledge of psychological theories and models concerning mental health disorders
  • have knowledge of theories of scientific knowledge in clinical psychology

Skills

On successful completion of this course, students will

  • be able to explain psychopathology and interventions as a basis for clinical practice
  • be able to evaluate clinical screening tools, interviews and tests
  • be able to explain and discuss how key concepts in clinical psychology are associated with and affected by sociocultural factors

General competencies

On successful completion of this course, students will

  • have a fundamental understanding of key issues related to development of mental health disorders, their assessment and relevant interventions
  • be able to discuss the application of clinical psychology models in meetings with users, their next of kin, and professional parties

The students must answer two out of three longer essay questions on clinical psychology. Students must achieve a pass mark in all the assignments to pass the examination for the course.

Consequences of failing a re-scheduled examination: If the student does not pass the examination at the re-scheduled examination at the latest, the student must re-sit the examination for the course with the subsequent year group. The student must take the examination in accordance with the relevant course description for the course, which may be new or revised. The student can decide whether they want to attend the teaching in the new examination semester.

All of the compulsory activities must be approved in order for the student to be eligible for examination. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb, normally no later than 7 days before the examination. Students who lack approval of one or more compulsory activities will be withdrawn from the examination.

Compulsary activities:

  • Practice visit and report: Completed practice visit including a reflexive report of 500 words with no references.
  • Written assignment: An essay of 1000 words plus references. The essay topic is announced at the beginning of the semester.
  • Presentation: Participation at obligatory presentation seminar for the written assignment.

Method of work

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars, as well as a mandatory practical visit:

  • The student is expected to prepare for the lectures by familiarizing himself with the literature given for each topic in the lecture plan.
  • At the seminars, the different topics are covered via different learning activities including case analysis, journal club and work with therapeutic tools and models.
  • A compulsory practical visit gives the students an insight into the work of clinical psychology. The student delivers a practice note after the practice visit.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
