Content

The course offers a foundation of knowledge on the project planning and management of events. This requires students working in teams with allocated roles and responsibilities. The course uses both a theoretical and practical approach to learning in which students will go through a creative decision-making process to be implemented into a formal feasibility study process. Thereby learning essential knowledge about the practical planning, documentation, organizational, and technical considerations for the staging of an event. In doing so, gaining an understanding of the different phases of successful event management.

This includes:

  • Event management
  • Strategic event project planning
  • Event creativity and design
  • Event stakeholders
  • Event feasibility assessments
  • Event impacts and legacies
  • Event production and human resources
  • Marketing and sponsorship in events
  • Financial management and events
  • Legal issues and risk management in events
  • Evaluations in events

Learning outcome

Upon completion of this course the candidate should have gained the following knowledge and skills. Students:

Knowledge

  • Will have a basic understanding of the concept of event planning and management
  • Will have knowledge about the main challenges of event project planning and management, and its place in society
  • Will have knowledge about the broader concepts of event impacts on organisations and society
  • Will have knowledge of different techniques for event project planning and management
  • Will be familiar with research and recent developments in the field of event project planning and management
  • Will be able to update their knowledge of event project planning and management

Skills

  • Will be able to develop strategies for effective team work for developing and synthesising all elements of event project planning and management, including tools and techniques
  • Will be able to develop feasible business and competitive strategies for events
  • Will be able to successfully develop a business proposition that is financially viable
  • Will be able to communicate in written, visual, and oral form with event stakeholders

  • Will be able to reflect on ethical issues related to event planning and management
  • Will be able to employ fundamental project management methodologies, as part of a group, to effectively plan an event

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate both the theoretical and practical skills they have developed in the module. Thus, the summative assessments for this module will consist of:

WE - the theoretical (first) part of the course will be examined by means of an individual written exam. Duration 1 hour. Weighting 20%.

PFS - the project feasibility study is an initial study of all key aspects regarding, e.g., the event team structure and lines of reporting, the event concept, the design and theme, the demand and completion within the market, an initial overview of the event marketing, initial overview of resource requirements, areas of income, potential costs, desired profits, and areas of business and organisational risks. The report is to be submitted in Inspera. Weighting: 40%.

EP - the key learnings from working with all aspects of event project planning and production will be created and presented by the students, showcasing their skills in staging an event and the different phases of successful event management. 10 minutes videopresentation. Weighting: 40%.

Compulsory assignments

During the semester, mandatory seminars will be held with a 75% mandatory attendance. This includes workshops and guest lectures. More details to be announced at semester start.

Mandatory participation in the final videopresentation.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
