Content

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th for the autumn semester.

This is a project-based course dealing with with topics within urban development, planning and design. During the course, the student goes through extensive work with investigating, analysing and shaping the urban environment on different scales, depending on with subject area is chosen. The course is meant to give the student the opportunity to thoroughly explore a subject regarding building, urban spaces, cities and regions.

Possible subject for the course are (but are not limited to)

  • Urban Open Spaces
  • Norwegian Wood
  • International urban development project (e.g. cities in other countries)

The subject and project depend on availability of tutors.

Learning outcome

After the course the student should (depending on the subject) have

  • Knowledge about principles for analysis of urban situations (building, urban space, city, region)
  • Understanding of spatial qualities, and how the physical environment generates atmosphere and character
  • Insight into users basic needs
  • Understanding of how changes in society lead to changes in building conventions, built environments, transport, protected areas and land use, societal safety, climate, etc.

After the course the student should (depending on the subject) be able to

  • Do spatial analyses relevant to the topic
  • Develop and review given building and planning programs as basis for a design
  • Apply relevant methods for the envelopment and orginazation of ideas of urban form and fuction.
  • Produce balanced land use and transport plans and evaluate such plans on a strategic level

After the course the student should (depending on the subject) have general knowledge regarding

  • The development and implementation of a given project
  • The in-depth study of a given topic
  • The Independent execution of theoretical and creative project work
  • The presentation of urban projects in a convincing and professional manner through sketches/drawing/illustrations, text, physical/virtual modelling

The course is based on project work. The scope of the work will be agreed with the teacher at the start according to the chosen theme.

Submission individually or in groups (depending on the complexity of the topic).

No resit-exam is offered on the project assignment. Students who do not pass the project assignment can take this part again the next time the subject has regular teaching.

Method of work

Project work with tutoring and various forms of presentation of concluded work during the term. NB! An agreement must be made with the faculty for tutoring before registration!

Students, in agreement with the teacher, have to develop their own work plan at the beginning of the semester. This plan should have several phases, and in each of them, some form of report or progress of the project that allows monitoring progress should be developed. Compliance with this plan by at least 75% will be necessary for the student to submit the final report.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
