The course is an introduction to urban design in contemporary cities. It deals mostly with redesigning and renewing problematic areas in existing cities and towns, including the aesthetic, technical, and functional aspects of planning, programming, and implementing projects in the public or private sector.

Content

The course is composed of a series of workshops and lectures. Each workshop deals with different stages of the urban design process, from site analysis and basic ideas to more advanced proposals. The hands-on workshops demand practical work from the students, such as site analysis and fieldwork, partial reports, physical models, and oral presentations. The lectures, on the other hand, introduce the students to basic concepts related to urban design.

Learning outcome

The goal is to create a basic understanding of place-making in urban areas in terms of:

  1. To gain abilities in design thinking for urban challenges
  2. Understanding the task of urban design and place-making
  3. Interpreting the context of the project leading to design premises
  4. Developing a design proposal in several stages, from basic ideas to more detailed plans
  5. Using tools and resources to present an urban design project in its different stages
  6. Using concepts specific to urban design, such as density, urban quality, vitality, complexity, durability, adaptability and social meaning.

The course is evaluated based on the report presented at the end of the course, which documents the project's process. Participation in classes and workshops is mandatory to submit the final report. The course does not offer a remedial exam. Students who fail must retake the entire course

Participation in at least three of the four workshops is mandatory.
