Course

Plastic Analysis of Structures (BYG530)

The course mainly provides a fundamental understanding of elastic-plastic behavior of materials/structures and principles of plastic collapse and energy dissipation of structures. The course covers the theorems and methods in plastic analysis. And also it discusses few case studies (collision, dropped object analysis and etc) while giving an Introduction to Accidental Limit State design guidelines.

Content

Principles of ultimate load design. Plastic capacities of cross sections (i.e. axial force, shear, torsion and bending moment capacities). Formation of plastic hinges and collapse mechanisms. Bound theorems of plastic analysis. Plastic capacities of beams, frames and plates under transverse loading, without and with axial load. Plastic load capacities of bolted/welded joints and tubular joints. Plastic load capacities of dented structural element. Plastic analysis and design case studies (collision, dropped object analysis and etc). Introduction to Accidental Limit State design guidelines, standards and codes. Theory of plasticity and introduction to numerical analysis.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student shall have a fundamental understanding of the principles of plastic collapse and energy dissipation of structures. Also students will be able to understand the behaviour of structures due to utimate and accidental loadings. Finally, students shall have skills to analysis and design onshore and offshore structures both in ultimate limit state and accidental limit state under non-linear material behaviour.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
