Master's thesis (DIGMAS)

The master's thesis is an independent project where students apply the knowledge acquired during their studies. The thesis is a crafted scholarly document presenting research questions and original arguments based on scientific methods under the guidance of an supervisor. The thesis gives students the opportunity to demonstrate expertise in their chosen area of research.

Content

The thesis should have a substantial research component that builds on theories, methods, and collected data within the field of social science and technology. Students can choose any relevant topic, but students that come from work experience are encouraged to develop their thesis problem in collaboration with the place of work. The thesis must be written under the guidance of a supervisor. Master thesis seminars are held in the third/Fall semester to prepare students for thesis work, and at the basis of the seminars are the writing of the thesis' research proposal. This research proposal has to be passed in order to write the thesis.

Learning outcome

It is expected that the students after completing the course will have the following knowledge, skills, and general competencies.

Knowledge

Upon completion of the master thesis, the student has:

  • Clear understanding of how to design and carry out a research project independently.
  • Knowledge of the theories and methods appropriate to answer chosen research questions.

Skills

Upon completion of the master thesis, the student can:

  • Develop a research design, apply the appropriate theory, and collect the data necessary to answer research questions.
  • Discuss the theoretical, practical, and normative implications of research findings.
  • Organise, summarise, and analyse data.
  • Present the research in a clear, scientific manner.

General competencies

Upon completion of the master thesis, the student can:

  • Plan and complete a large academic project under supervision and in accordance with existing norms for research ethics.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to the chosen area of research.

Students with less than 60 ECTS/credits will not be able to start DIGMAS.

MEE125 (or MEE115 or MEN155) and MEN185 (or MEE140 or MEN225) have to be passed, in addition to DIG501 and DIG502.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

Compulsory assignments
Approved research proposal to be submitted before starting writing. The proposal has to be passed in order to proceed with the writing of thesis.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
