Content

The module focuses on integration of migrants in theory, politics and practice. Concepts of assimilation, differential exclusion, pluralism and multiculturalism will be discussed in synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Students will explore different ways in which countries react to immigration and settlement, discuss the nexus between immigration, integration and welfare state, learn how to analyse integration policies across eight key areas (MIPEX), and examine different levels of integration - ranging from the institutional to collective and individual/everyday life level. Students will also explore integration of vulnerable migrants through the lens of intersectionality and concepts of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue.

The lectures are divided into three parts:

  1. Theoretical insights
  2. Policy Analysis
  3. Discussion on selected themes

Lectures, workshops and reading groups will be organised to provide in-depth insight into the above themes. After finishing the module, the students should be able to: critically evaluate theories, concepts and policies relating to integration; compare and contrast different integration policies and strategies; confidently take part in discussions on current pressing issues concerning integration.
