Arts-based critical literacy approaches to working with migration in educational contexts (EMM223)

This module will address aesthetic critical literacy approaches to working with migration and intercultural encounters in educational contexts, including through picturebooks, graphic novels, art, and drama. It introduces migration literature from a range of global contexts and considers issues of diversity, positioning, voice, agency, and access within the selected texts, as well as their influence on teaching at the classroom level. In addition to exploring the potential of migration literature for developing students’ intercultural competence and critical literacy skills, the course will introduce various educational resources for promoting intercultural citizenship, including the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) and the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters (AIE).

It introduces migration literature from a range of global contexts and considers issues of diversity, positioning, voice, agency, and access within the selected texts, as well as their influence on teaching practices. In addition to exploring the potential of migration literature for developing students’ intercultural competence and critical literacy skills, the course will introduce various educational resources for promoting intercultural citizenship, including the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) and the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters (AIE).

Learning outcome

After completing the course, students will:

  • Have acquired knowledge of arts-based and critical literacy approaches for working with interculturality and migration in educational contexts
  • Be able to identify multiple perspectives within texts and critically evaluate these for discourses of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, poverty and class
  • Have developed an understanding of the relationship between language, culture, literacy and power and their influence on teaching in multilingual and multicultural contexts
  • Be able to apply their knowledge of critical literacies pedagogy and arts-based, experiential, and dialogical literature approaches to further develop their own intercultural competence and critical literacy skills related to the topic of migration

The class will in addition cover EMMIR learning outcomes 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13 and 14 together with the other modules.
