Content

The course discusses use of basic statistical analysis, random and systematic measurement uncertainty, theory of error propagation, dimensional analysis, presentation of measurement data, research ethics. The students get training in report writing.

Learning outcome

After having completed this course the student should be able to:

  • Realise that different types of uncertainties are to be associated with experimental measurements.
  • Conduct standard procedures for propagation of errors.
  • Apply statistical methods for analysing and presenting experimental data.
  • Exercise basic experimental skills with focus on accuracy.
  • Write a technical report.

Forkunnskapskrav

HSE-course for bachelor students (TN101)

Anbefalte forkunnskaper

Mechanics (FYS100), Mathematical Methods 1 (MAT100)

Exam

Form of assessment Weight Duration Marks Aid
Written exam 3/5 4 Hours Letter grades
Report 2/5 Letter grades

All parts must be passed in order to obtain a final grade in the course.

Lab report: If a student fails or want to improve the grade, she/he has to do the lab report again the following year.

Exam is with pen and paper.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

Compulsory hand-ins
In total 8 compulsory laboratory assigments are to be carried out. The seven must be approved before access to the exam is given. The eighth assignment accounts for 40% of the total grade. The schedule for the assignments will be published on Canvas when the semester starts.

Fagperson(er)

Course teacher:

Ioana Andreea Nes

Course coordinator:

Olena Zavorotynska

Method of work

From six to two hours of lectures per week and 8 compulsory laboratory-assignments. The students must have the first 7 laboratory reports approved to be allowed to take the last 8th examlab. The last assignment is evaluated and counts 40% of the final grade. Voluntary exercises.

Åpent for

Owing to limited capacity only students assigned to the bachelor-program of Physics and Mathematics have access. A limited number of students from other programmes may be given access by application only.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
