Course

Project Course in Petroleum Geology (GEO907)

This course gives the students a fundamental and specialised knowledge in the project topic. The students will learn to understand the fundamentals of the used methods and the many aspects of data processing and interpretation. The topic of this project course will be decided on an individual basis and depends on the field of specialisation of the PhD student.

Content

The topic will be decided on an individual basis and depends on the field of specialisation of the PhD student. The project topic may be a subfield of one or several of the following geoscientific disciplines. Also subfields of geoscientific disciplines, or disciplines related to geosciences that are not mentioned here are possible:

Sequence stratigraphy and depositional systems, structural geology, petrography and geochemistry including mineralogy and isotope geochemistry, exploration geophysics and petrophysics, subsurface interpretation, geostatistics and decision analysis, construction of geomodels, and geospatial applications.

Learning outcome

After the course, the students should have fundamental and specialised knowledge in the project topic. The students should fully understand the fundamentals of the used methods and the many aspects of data processing and interpretation. They should understand and be able to communicate the scientific and / or industrial importance of the project results - on a broader scale than the actual project topic.

Forkunnskapskrav

Master degree in Geosciences or Petroleum Engineering

Anbefalte forkunnskaper

Completed courses at BSc or MSc level including specialisation tools or topics relevant for the PhD project. Alternatively or additionally, first-hand experience with these tools or topics is recommended.

The student has to write a report and give an oral presentation on the same topic. In agreement with the student, the supervisor of the PhD student defines the topic at the beginning of the course. The report may, e. g., be an internal report or a congress abstract. The oral presentation accordingly may be official or unofficial (with or without audience). The decision for this and for the length and structure of the report and for the oral presentation is taken by the supervisor.

The final grade will be based on the quality of the report and the oral presentation. The two parts will count for 50 % each of the final grade.

Method of work

The student will work on an individual geoscientific project which thematically is related to the PhD topic. The topic of the project must be such that the project results can be presented orally.
