Applied exercise and training methods (IDR232)

The course provides an in-depth study of exercise science, where students gain comprehensive knowledge of the adaptations expected from systematic training. It establishes a solid foundation for the practical application of exercise science, with an emphasis on how training should be tailored to both individuals and groups at different skill levels. Through this, students acquire relevant competencies that prepare them for the workforce, where they will encounter the need to adapt training methods for various clients, whether they are recreational participants or elite athletes.

  • Design and practical testing of various training programs for endurance, strength, power, and speed.
  • Training for children, adolescents, pregnant women, postpartum, the elderly, and elite athletes.
  • Student-driven implementation of recognized testing methods.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate should have:

  • In-depth knowledge of theories and methods for training and training planning.
  • Knowledge of physiological adaptations resulting from various training methods.
  • Knowledge of, experience with, and the execution of tests that are appropriate to use as management tools in various sports at different levels.
  • Knowledge of health assessment.
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition concepts and strategies.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to the role of a coach.

Skills

The candidate should be able to:

  • Explain and discuss the relationships between physiological parameters and performance ability in various sports, as well as from a health perspective. This skill is highly sought after in the workforce, particularly in training guidance and performance development. It involves using data to improve the performance of both athletes and individuals training for health purposes.
  • Develop a comprehensive capacity analysis based on results from appropriate tests, to set goals in a tailored training plan. This provides students with skills directly applicable in jobs as a coach or personal trainer, where testing and analysis are often needed to create customized training programs for various individuals.
  • Develop and present short-term and long-term training plans for individuals with different goals at various stages of life. This equips students with the skills to design training plans adapted to both short-term and long-term goals, which is highly relevant in professions such as coach, personal trainer, or other roles where individual adaptation is crucial to meeting people's needs throughout different phases of life.

General Competence

The candidate should be able to:

  • Assess individuals' total workload and the necessary adjustments to training programs.
  • Analyze and evaluate training effects over time and suggest modifications to equipment, programs, and exercises.
  • Critically evaluate the use of testing and measurements in various contexts.
  • Assess sports science literature and apply it in practical coaching work in individual and team sports, or as a training guide in the fitness industry.

Practical Methodical Exam: The student prepares a training plan for the practical-methodical exam. After its completion, there will be an academic discussion with the instructors. Assessment criteria will be made available through Canvas no later than the start of each activity.

  • Mandatory Laboratory Work: A group assignment (maximum of 3 people per group) must be submitted after the completion of the laboratory work. Word count: 1500 ±10%.
  • 80% attendance is required in practical sessions.
  • 3-4 case assignments related to practical teaching, where the training plan is submitted with 350 words ±10% (1 page) for each case.

Those who receive a "not approved" assessment on one or more of the assignments at the first submission will be given the opportunity to submit a revised version. All assignments must be approved in order to take the exam/assessment.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
