Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (IND650)

The course is based on both a theoretical approach to technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and on the practical application of this knowledge through case studies. The innovation part is organized around the areas of enabling identification and evaluation of innovation opportunities. The part on entrepreneurship is focused around the skills and knowledge necessary to set up a growth company.

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th for the autumn semester.

The course deals with innovation, innovation management and entrepreneurship, especially in relation to technology-based companies with high growth potential. Some very strong technology trends are changing industries, replacing products and services and how thing are done. This will be a major window of opportunity for innovation. The first aim of the course is to be able to recognize these opportunities. Another aim is on evaulation of innovations; to enable separating good opportunities from less good ones. The final aim is to gain the most impotant knowledge in the areas of entrepreneurship to improve the probability of succeding with a venture.

The course covers the main topics for developing and managing innovations and establishing a start-up. It covers methods for identifying and evaluating innovation opportunities and how these can be pursued through establishing a business.

The form of work is centered around group work and the preparation of reports that form the basis for grading.

Learning outcome

The course shall give the student an understanding of the theoretical foundation and the practical application in the areas of innovation, innovation management and entrepreneurship. After having taken this course the student should have the following knowledge, skills and general competence:

  • Understand the foundations and implications of the dynamics of innovation
  • Knowledge of the process of formulating and implementing innovation strategies
  • Understanding the role of and process of gaining intellectual property rights
  • Knowledge of the formation and development of a business venture

Skills

  • Be able to identify and interpret technological trends
  • Be able to identify potential sources and areas of innovation
  • Be able to Identify opportunities, risks and competitive advantages in a business formation
  • Be able to set up a business plan, including the technological, organizational, financial and marketing aspects

General competence

  • Be able to interpret the competitive environment and identify trends
  • Have combinatory skills across disciplines

Folder evaluation is an examination form where several pieces of work is delivered during the semester, where the evaluation of these are done on the combined work and one joint grade is given. The folder consist of 3 reports that are done individually or in groups of 2-3 people. These reports are handed in over the semester and graded jointly. No grade is given until all part of the project are handed in, and it is the totality that is graded.

Weight: Part 1=25%, Part 2=25%, Part 3=50%. Groups: 1-3 persons

There are no follow up exam for the folder and no retake opportunity. Students that want to improve their grade can do this next time the course is given

Method of work

Lectures wil be provided partly online and partly in the classroom. Most of curriculum lectures will be on the university's learning platform as videos.

Guest lectures with practical examples.

A project in several parts that will be done as group work. This form the basis for grading.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
