Separation and Purification Technology (MLJ630)

This course will introduce the principles and design approaches of separation and purification technologies used in various industrial sectors such as wastewater, aqua industry, pharma industry, biorefinery and offshore sectors. Furthermore new advancements in the field are presented and the candidates are challenged to propose novel applications of standard and novel techniques and biotechnological approaches.

The course will feature guest lectures by industrial/academic experts. Industrial visits will be arranged.

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by January 20th for the spring semester.

Separation and purification processes are used in a wide range of industries on field and off-field. Solid-liquid, gas-gas and liquid-liquid separation techniques are under active investigation by researchers all over the world towards efficient separation and purification. The course will cover both fundamental and applied aspects of solid, gas and liquid separations; and additional biological separation at molecular level, a broad spectrum of activities from lab scale to pilot plant to full-scale plants, through laboratory investigations and theoretical studies. The course offers available and practical methods for efficient separation and purification from various suspensions, membrane filtration, cell rupture, phase separation technologies and electrical separation techniques. In addition new or improved separation & purification methods or principles on biotechnology, biobased feedstocks/products, green technology with respect to resource recovery and recycling will be covered.

Fundamental theory and applied aspects are linked to provide new insights, and to indicate new and innovative ways of solving practical problems of the current industries. Discussion on various industrial cases and new perspective/opinion will help to understand remaining uncertainties. Extensive references and case studies will encourage further studies in the field.

Learning outcome

This course introduces fundamental terminology, basic analysis and applications of the principles of various separation and purification technologies.

Students will be able to understand and analyze theories and case situations in which unit processes are to solve problems within the field of environmental engineering and applied biotechnology. Knowledge gained provides students with a basis to understand and contribute to the development of novel techniques and applications.
