Qualitative Research Methods (MPH105)

This is an introductory course in qualitative research methods for Master students in Prehospital Critical Care. The course focuses on developing the student’s understanding of what characterizes qualitative research, including its applicability, fundamental concepts, choice of methods, different phases, and ethical considerations, as well as providing insight into some of the challenges surrounding quality appraisal in qualitative research.

The candidate

  • Has thorough knowledge of the field of qualitative research, methodologies and methods
  • Can apply knowledge of qualitative methods to new areas and address research problems within the field of prehospital critical care
  • Can analyse qualitative studies and appraise their quality, on the basis of the history, traditions, and distinctive character of qualitative research as an academic field

Skills

The candidate

  • Can analyze and critically assess different sources of information on qualitative methods and use them to structure and formulate scholarly arguments
  • Can analyze the application of qualitative methods in prehospital critical care and work independently on practical and theoretical problems
  • Can outline an independent, limited qualitative research project related to own research interest, in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics

General competence

The candidate

  • Can analyze and critically reflect on academic, professional and research ethical problems in qualitative research within prehospital critical care
  • Can apply knowledge and skills in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects
  • Can communicate independent work, using academic language and terminology

The assessment in the course is a 14 day home exam.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

80 % attendance
80% class attendance. If more than 50% attendance is achieved the student will be given an individual evaluation.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
