This course gives an overview of the offshore industry and an introduction to methods and technologies relating to the development of offshore oil and gas fields.

Content

The following topics are covered: historical background and development, information relating to petroleum resources and production, definitions relating to exploration, reservoir characteristics, drilling and well technology, methods and technologies relating to field development, design basis, systems design, functionality and design of production facilities, platform concepts, subsea solutions, pipelines, estimation of capital expenditure and operating expenditure, principles for project execution, economic analysis, risk assessment and decision criteria.

There will also be more details into marine technology: Design parameters for marine structures (Wind, wave current, Stability of floating units, Mooring of floating units), Construction and installation of platforms, Different fixed and floating platform concepts (Design basis and functional requirements, Design principles, Dynamic behaviour, Platform selection).

Learning outcome

After the courses the student shall:

  • Understand the business drivers in the offshore oil and gas industry
  • Understand the importance of a value chain perspective
  • Understand the importance of multidiscipline work
  • Be aware of the variety of technical solutions that can be used
  • Be aware of limitations and feasibility issues of specific solutions
  • Understand that the suitability of specific solutions depends on the circumstances
  • Understand different types of marine technologies used in offshore field development
  • Understand different types of methods used for the construction and installation of platforms
  • Understand the different fixed and floating platform concepts
