Project Work (TNU510)

This course is open for exchange students from partner universities. Admission depends on faculty capacity. The student wishing to register for this course must apply for admission through the international office at UiS within the deadline (1st November / 1st May). The topic/content of the project is to be defined together with supervisor prior to the start of the project. Exchange students planning to write their master thesis at UiS must be in their final year of their master. Please note that the master thesis must be delivered and evaluated at their home university. Exact duration of the exchange period must be agreed upon with the supervisor.

Content

The topic/ content of the project is to be defined by the advisor prior to the start of the project. The project should address challenging scientific research or development problems.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student will have experience from (knowledge and skills):

  • working individually on a challenging scientific research or development problem
  • planning and conducting a project
  • seeking and assessing work in a field relevant to the project
  • developing and accessing alternative solutions to the problem
  • documenting the results in a scientific report

General competence:

  • The student will have developed a positive attitude to working in a scientific and problem-oriented way and is familiar with the ethics of scientific research.

Forkunnskapskrav

Documented BA degree in relevant fields of study within engineering and /or natural sciences. Require prerequisites will depend on topic of the project work.

The assessment of the course consists of a report that counts 100% of the final grade.

The student must submit a 30-40 page report before the end of the period, or at a date agreed with the supervisor. The project report might also have to be presented orally at the end of the project (to be defined by the supervisor).

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Students that fail the report may re-present it within one week.

Method of work

Active participation is required. The student should work full time with qualified tasks and participate continuously in the daily work. Project status must be reported regularly to the supervisor.

This course is only available for students nominated through an exchange study agreement with the Faculty of Science and Technology at University of Stavanger (UiS). Admission depends on supervisor capacity. The student must apply for admission through the international office within the given deadline (1 November for the spring semester and 1 May for the autumn semester). The student must establish contact with the relevant department/research centre/ academic and secure a supervisor at UiS. The student must submit the relevant form including the supervisor’s signature and employee number, short project description, and planned project dates in Søknadsweb by the application deadline. Applications missing mandatory documentation by the application deadline will not be considered.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
