Bachelor's Thesis in Customs and Border Management (TOLBAC)

To conclude the three-year bachelor’s programme in Customs and Border Management, students must prepare a written bachelor’s thesis based on an academically relevant topic where they utilise relevant perspectives from the programme of study and methodological research tools.

Content

The thesis should initially be written in groups of two or three students with the support of a supervisor appointed by the department. Students choose the thesis topic. Students are responsible for planning the project, including choosing relevant methods for collecting information and utilising relevant literature. The supervisor acts as an academic advisor during the process.

After successfully completing the course, students will have the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

  • A chosen thesis topic based on relevant theories and methods from the programme of study
  • Academic thesis requirements
  • How relevant thesis information is collected, documented, assessed and applied.

After successfully completing the course, students will have skills in:

  • Formulating a delimited and manageable research question for an academic thesis
  • Searching for relevant source material
  • Applying relevant methodological research tools

After successfully completing the course, students will have general competence in:

  • Planning and carrying out relevant research work under supervision
  • Preparing a thesis that satisfies academic writing requirements with regard to systematic thinking, objective assessment, written presentation skills and source referencing
  • Presenting information and subject matter in order to shed light on an issue

It is assumed that students have completed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd semesters of the bachelor’s programme in Customs and Border Management.

The thesis should initially be written in groups of two or three students. In exceptional cases and after a reasoned application to the person responsible for the course, it may be granted permission to write the thesis individually. The thesis should normally be 10,000 words (+/- 10%). If you are granted to write individually, the assignment should normally be 8500 words (+/- 10%).

The thesis must be submitted digitally in Inspera.

Method of work

Students are advised to bring a project sketch with them to their first supervision, which will be used as a starting point in the work on the bachelor's thesis. The supervision should primarily be related to the process of developing and shaping the thesis, such as sharpening the research question, clarifications of research methodology, preparation for obtaining empirical data, use of literature and outline of the thesis.

It is recommended that students take a course in literature search and source criticism in collaboration with the university library.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
