Secondary Instrument (VIM100)

The subject may be chosen by students who have good skills on an instrument other than their main instrument, or on a baroque version of their own main instrument. The course requires an approved entrance exam.

During the academic year, the student must study a repertoire of a scope approved by the instrumental teacher, with genre/stylistic breadth and a degree of difficulty that documents a developed technical level and musical understanding.

Content

The subject is largely based on individual guidance and interaction. Among the teaching topics, skills in solo playing/singing, ensemble playing, prima vista, improvisation will be central. During the academic year, the student takes part in seminars, projects and concerts.

Learning outcome

General competence:

  • make independent choices of working methods and methods that promote own professional development, including musical shaping and rehearsal

Knowledge:

  • have basic knowledge of relevant repertoire for the second instrument
  • be able to assess own learning and set goals for own improvement and development

Skills:

  • have basic technical and musical skills on a different instrument than the principal instrument
  • have experioence with concert performance on the second instrument
  • demonstrate instrumental skills and expressiveness in solo playing, as well as skills in prima vista and/or interpretation/improvisation at a level recruiting for a bachelor in performing music
  • able to perform a repertoire that shows some genre and stylistic breadth

Forkunnskapskrav

Bachelor in music performance or equivalent. Approved audition in secondary instrument.

The English language requirement must be passed in accordance with UiS regulations.

Final performance exam in the spring semester.

The exam for classical students is a final concert with a program of approx. 30 minutes.

The exam for jazz/improvisational music students is a performance exam of approximately 30 minutes, which is performed in an ensemble approved in advance by the subject teacher.

100% compulsory attendance at classes, projects and concerts.

Reference is made to the faculty's "Attendance requirements", which follow UiS's examination regulations.

The various instrument groups will have different requirements and different forms of documentation. The requirements are specified in the subject groups' annual plans (e.g. number of seminars with active participation, etc.).

In order to be able to take the exam in the subject, the student must have completed all mandatory work requirements.

Method of work

All teaching normally takes place via weekly individual teaching, and students participate in internal seminars and projects. Teaching can in some cases be organized in concentrated periods of the academic year.

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
