Language of instruction

The course of study is aimed at applicants who have completed a Bachelor's degree in music performance or equivalent education.

The language of instruction is normally Norwegian. The working language can be changed as necessary to accommodate participation of international students.

The form of teaching is a combination of one-to-one teaching and ensemble classes. Please see the individual courses for more detailed descriptions. The learning environment is made up of and comprises teaching involving lecturers, project-based ensemble playing, access to practice rooms at the place of learning and ongoing collaboration with actors in Bjergsted Park. Access to their own departmental library and the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound’s premises gives students a unique listening and immersion facility in a music-archive context. The faculty's large proportion of international students gives the course of study an international flavour.

The course of study is made up of a combination of two 30-credit courses on the basis of fixed, recommended course combinations. The teaching is given over two semesters, starting in the autumn and with a final examination in the spring. Teaching is normally given in parallel, but will if necessary be structured in concentrated periods of the year.

Attendance is compulsory on all courses in the Faculty of Performing Arts. A maximum absence of 20% is nevertheless possible. Students with a higher absence percentage and without any valid documentable reason lose the right to take the examination – see Examination Regulations for the University of Stavanger, Section 5, Subsection 4. There will be other mandatory work requirements – see the individual course descriptions for further information.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course of study, candidates will:

General proficiency

•be able to reflect on their own performance practice at a level higher than upon completion of a Bachelor's in music performance

Knowledge

•have a detailed knowledge of the subject area and insight into their main instrument at a level higher than upon completion of a Bachelor’s in music performance.

Skills

•be able to demonstrate an advanced level as a performing musician

•be able to demonstrate a professional level of artistic communication

Career prospects

Students will acquire knowledge, skills and proficiency indicating a level clearly above Bachelor’s, and providing a basis for soloistic and ensemble concert activities in a professional context. Completed study provides a basis for admission to Master's degree programmes in music performance at the University of Stavanger or other national educational institutes.

Course assessment

The degree programme is subject to the usual quality-assurance system at the University of Stavanger, and undergoes course and programme assessment in accordance with the current plan within the faculty.

Study plan and courses

Student exchange

The degree programme is well set up for internationalisation in several ways. Students who want to study abroad for a period can choose between doing one or two semesters of study on an exchange basis. Academically, the degree programme has a structure similar to a framework for instrumental/vocal practice, regardless of instrument or voice type, as well as chamber music/second instrument. This provides many options abroad, and simplifies approval procedures. Information on current places to study abroad can be found on the faculty's website.

Student exchange is organised through rounds of application with the usual application deadlines in accordance with the University of Stavanger’s annual international cycle. Approval takes place through academic supervision within the department. The international coordinator is responsible for practical organisation and case management for approval issues. The study coordinator or person appointed by the study coordinator is responsible for academic supervision regarding learning agreements during the exchange. All study-programme agreements have been allocated a specialist who is responsible for follow-up, maintenance and approval issues.

Students who do not wish to take advantage of the offering and foreign exchanges will take part in a study programme with an international character through collaboration with international musicians at Performing Arts, or from Bjergsted Park's collaborators. Incoming exchange students and international teaching staff will also greatly contribute to the international profile.
