The main goal of the three-year engineer education program is to train engineers who, through theoretical and technical knowledge will acquire competence in independent work and who will assume responsibility for the relationships between technology, environment and society. The program is research based, at a professional high international level and it provides a platform for lifelong learning. The bachelor program in mechanical engineering is a three-year foundation program of 180 ECTS over six semesters. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION The program in mechanical engineering is based on a solid foundation in mathematics and natural science which provide the necessary tools for mastering the more technical courses later in the program. The basic subjects (G) come early in the progression of the courses. To create a feeling of identity and belonging to the field of mechanical engineering, technical courses (T) are also placed early in the program.
There is an increasing emphasis on mechanical engineering and materials technology subjects throughout the program. The aim is to enable the students to select materials, develop, design and determine dimensions for structures and components. Important topics are material characteristics, structural behaviour and design criteria. Electives (V) and social studies subjects (S) are placed toward the end of the program where a possible study period abroad can be fitted in. The final project, the bachelor assignment (paper) (B) of 15 ECTS, may be carried out individually or in groups. In order to be assigned a topic for a bachelor paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Bachelor's thesis. UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of the courses will necessarily have to change over time because of professional development, use of new technology and general social change.

Learning outcome
Candidates with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering will have knowledge within materials science and mechanical engineering with emphasize on strength analysis, design and selection of materials.
