Course

Concrete Technology (BYG605)

The course comprise basic concrete technology for use in buildings and constructions. Mix design of different types of concrete and measurments of fresh and hardened properties. Understanding of the importance of the materials for the concrete properties. The course also covers a review of various production methods such as slip forming, as well as special types of concrete such as lightweight concrete and self-compacting concrete. Concrete as a sustainable material and how to reduce environmental emissions are part of the course.

Content

The course gives a thorough introduction to following subjects: Mix design, cement and pozzolanic materials, aggregates, admixtures, concrete mixture design, properties of fresh conditions in addition to concrete mechanical and durability properties when using different types of concrete. Also construction methods will be a part of the course.

The content of the course: general concrete practice, standards, fresh concrete properties, proportioning, concrete materials, cement hydration, curing technologies, mechanical properties, shrinkage, permeability, frost detoriation and reinforcement corrosion. Concrete as a material from an environmental perspective, and how to reduce environmental impact and future zero-emission concrete are part of the content of the course.

Learning outcome

After completing this course the student will have a thorough knowledge of concrete with respect to spesial types of concrete and use of concrete, mixture design and production of concrete and properties of fresh and hardened concrete including an overview of important requirement in NS-EN 206.

Technical skills

  • Good overview of parameters affecting the quality in fresh and hardened concrete
  • Can evaluate and plan measures to improve the quality in the concrete
  • Basic knowledge within repair of concrete structures

General competence

  • Basic concrete technology

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
