Content

The course will provide an overview of communication networks with a focus on communications technology. The course covers the following general network principles: multiplexing, packet and circuit switching, protocol concept, layered models,simple queuing principles, flow control and congestion control. It also includes specific examples taken from the Internet, such as algorithms for the exchange of routing information and the name service system (DNS), and the most common Internet protocols, including TCP / IP and HTTP. The course will describe how a router works and what functions a router performs. It will also examine fundamental network technologies such as LAN, cabling, Ethernet, IP addressing and Subnetting. The course includes several practical laboratory exercises with applications to network components with industrial standard. Having reviewed the subject and further independent study may lead to attractive Cisco CCENT / CCNA certification via UiS IT department.

Learning outcome

At the end of this course, the student shall: Have comprehensive insight in how a computer network functions

Skills: Have knowledge about network technology and network terminology. Know how the TCP protocol may be implement. Know some routing algorithms used to route packages through a network

General qualifications: Have comprehensive insight in how a computer network functions Have knowledge about the layered model, which is used with Internet and the services every layers offers
