Content

This course provides an introduction to networking and networking technologies with emphasis on communication technology. The course is intended as an introduction to the general principles of network technology. The following topics are central to the course:

multiplexing

packet and circuit switching

protocols

layered models

simple queuing principle

flow control

congestion control

The Internet is used as an example of how a data network can be built up. Based on internet also introduces:

general routing algorithms

Internet protocols TCP / IP and HTTP

The course also discusses the structure of routers and switches. Fundamental networking technology as LAN, cabling, IP addressing and sub-netting is also being reviewed. The course includes several practical lab exercises, and standard network components.

Learning outcome

After taking this course the student should be familiar with: The behavior and structure of a computer network, network technologies and principles for operation of a communication network.

Skills: Have knowledge of network technology and network terminology. Know some simple algorithms for routing packets through a network.

General skills: Know how a communication network works. Know the difference between the seven layer OSI model and the TCP/IP model, and know what services each layer provides.
