Geothermal Energy Systems (ENP130)

Because of the complex energy and climate challenges that we face today, energy transition towards clean, flexible, sustainable, and affordable energy solutions is at the top of the global, national, and local agendas. This resulted in an ever-increasing need for future engineers with more cross-disciplinary educational background and skills.

The objective of this course is to provide the students with the necessary knowledge required for contributing to "global energy transition", and "clean and affordable energy for all" goals. This will be achieved in this course via enabling the students with the necessary knowledge about geothermal energy resources and relevant energy conversion technologies to utilize such resources in various applications, and to supply electricity and heating/cooling demands.

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th.

This course provides the students with general knowledge about geothermal energy, and its advantages and disadvantages compared to other renewable and non-renewable energy sources. It provides a general overview of various aspects of geothermal energy, from sub-surface to surface energy conversion technologies, with different level of details.

The course specifically deals with different technologies such as heat pumps, and steam cycles, as well as flash, and binary systems, as applied to geothermal energy systems for different applications, such as power production or thermal applications. The course reviews some of the basics of thermodynamics, and applications of some thermodynamic diagrams to perform simple system analysis.

Learning outcome

The students are expected to get a broad and basic understanding of geothermal energy.

The students will be equipped with the needed knowledge to perform simple analyses of various geothermal systems from energy, environmental, and performance perspectives.

The students are expected to apply their drilling and thermodynamics knowledge to assess simple geothermal energy systems.

Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics (FYS200)

For incoming exchange students, the pre-requisite for this course is having passed equal to 10 ECTS in Thermodynamics.

For local students the pre-requisite is FYS200 Termo- og fluiddynamikk.
