Content

Water chemistry introduces the principles and applications for chemical equilibriums in aquatic systems. The course includes weak and strong single- and multiple acids and bases, and shows pH-concentration diagrammes for these species, where one learns to calculate the pH in such complex systems. Titration curves and buffer properties for such systems will be discussed. The equilibriums between gas and liquid phase for e.g. CO2 will be included. The equilibriums between metals and water and with selected complex formers will be discussed. The ions redox reactions in water will also be included.

Learning outcome

After passing this course the students should be able to:
  • understand chemical concepts in water chemistry
  • be able to set up redox reaction equations and to calculate electrochemical potentials
  • understand acid and base reactions and metal ion reactions
  • have knowledge of gas/liquid equlibria and absorption reactions on surfaces
