Content
Water chemistry introduces the principles and applications for chemical equilibria in aquatic systems. The course includes weak and strong single- and multiple acid- and base systems, including calculations on such complex systems. Titration curves and buffer properties will be discussed. The equilibria between gas and liquid phase (e.g. for CO2 ) will be included. The equilibria between metals selected complex formers will be discussed.
Learning outcome
After passing this course the students should be able to:
- understand general topics as acid and base reactions, precipitation/dissolution and complexing
- understand basic analytical methods used in water chemistry (eg. for pH, conductivity & alkalinity)
- understand the carbonate buffer system, and the impact for aquatic chemistry in general
- understand effects of speciation on availability and toxicity of selected ions
