Course

Mechanical Design (MSK210)

The course focuses on the fundamentals of mechanical design including material selection, dimensioning (strength calculation) principles with respect to diverse failure modes such as yielding, buckling and fatigue. Upon understanding the fundamentals, the application of the dimensioning techniques and valid standards are demonstrated for common machine elements such as axles, bearings, springs, brakes as well as welded and bolted joints. Introduction to the study of mechanisms and transmission systems is also briefly given.

Content

Core elements include basics of machine design (design techniques), standards and norms (codes), measuring units, mechanical properties of engineering materials, dimensioning principles, failure modes and failure hypotheses; Strength calculation for screw, weld and press joints, fits and tolerances; dimensioning of axles and rotors, springs, bearings, clutches and break systems; Introduction to study of mechanisms and transmission systems.

Learning outcome

Upon completing this course, students are expected to have sufficient knowledge about the function of common machine elements and the dimensioning methods in solving elementary mechanical design problems. By participating in the project work, the students get skills of design methodologies and team work and achieve sufficient general competence about generating new product ideas, innovation, and development of new products and mechanical systems.
