Course

Secondary Instrument (VIM100)

The course is equivalent to the lowest performance level of the performance courses at Performing Arts. Students here get an introduction to instrumental/vocal performance on a specific instrument, based on existing musical knowledge from upper secondary schools specialising in music. Among the teaching topics, skills in solo playing/singing, ensemble playing, sight-reading, figured bass and improvisation will be crucial. During the course of the academic year students will study repertoire of a scope approved by the lecturer, in a wide range of genres/styles and of a degree of difficulty that documents a developed technical level and musical understanding.  Individual main-instrument teachers are responsible for their instrumental areas in relation to their students, whilst overall responsibility for the subject area Performance lies with the subject heads Harald Eikaas (classical) and Stein Inge Brækhus (jazz/improvisation).

Method of work

Implementation of the course's teaching makes use of seminars, project work, ensemble playing and student concerts. All performance activities and passive activities in the above categories are deemed to be an essential part of the student's development as a performing musician.

All teaching is normally given in the form of individual weekly lessons, and the students also participate in internal seminars and projects. Teaching can in some cases be organised in concentrated periods during the academic year.
