Secondary Instrument (VIM100)

The student receives an introduction to instrumental/vocal practice on a specific instrument, corresponding to music-related knowledge from upper secondary school with specialization in music. Among the teaching topics, skills in solo playing/singing, ensemble playing, prima vista, deciphering, improvisation will be central. During the academic year, the student must study a repertoire of a scope approved by the subject teacher, with genre/stylistic breadth and a degree of difficulty that documents a developed technical level and musical understanding.

The individual principal instrument teacher is responsible for their instrumental areas in relation to their students.

The course provides an introduction to instrumental/vocal performance based on existing music knowledge from upper secondary school with a focus on music. The subject is largely based on individual guidance and interaction. Among the teaching topics, skills in solo playing/singing, ensemble playing, prima vista, improvisation will be central. During the academic year, the student must study a repertoire of a scope approved by the subject teacher, with genre/stylistic breadth and a degree of difficulty that documents a developed technical level and musical understanding.

Skills:

  • be able to assess own learning and set goals for own improvement and development

Skills:

  • demonstrate instrumental skills and expressiveness in solo playing, as well as skills in prima vista and/or interpretation/improvisation at a level recruiting for a bachelor in performing music
  • able to perform a repertoire that shows some genre and stylistic breadth

Final performance exam in the spring semester.

The exam for classical students is a final concert with a program of approx. 20 minutes.

The exam for jazz/improvisational music students is a performance exam on the main instrument of approximately 15 minutes, which is performed in an ensemble approved in advance by the subject teacher.

Vilkår for å gå opp til eksamen/vurdering

100% compulsory attendance at classes, completion of the performance semester test before Christmas (applies only to classical and conducting students), as well as compulsory participation in projects and concerts.

In order to be able to take the exam in the subject, the student must have completed all mandatory work requirements.

Reference is made to the faculty's "Attendance requirements", which follow UiS's examination regulations.

Repertoire list/reflection text must be delivered on Canvas by the announced deadline.

The various instrument groups will have different requirements and different forms of documentation. The requirements are specified in the subject groups' annual plans (e.g. number of seminars with active participation, etc.).

Method of work

The course makes use of seminars, project work, interaction and student concerts. All performing and passive participation under the aforementioned categories is considered an indispensable part of the student's development as a performing musician.

All teaching normally takes place via weekly individual teaching, and students participate in internal seminars and projects. Teaching can in some cases be organized in concentrated periods of the academic year.

Students are responsible for keeping up-to-date on information provided on Canvas.
