Audiovisual Storytelling 3 (BFJ301)

This course is a specialisation in audiovisual storytelling, particularly alternative narrative forms, and new ways to structure a material. This material consists of text, pictures, sound, music and interactivity.

Content

The subjects consists of two parts. One part focusing on multimedia storytelling and one part focusing on documentary film. The course will be structured around bigger assignments that will be a part of a portfolio assessment.

A theoretical introduction to alternative narrative models, interactivity and hierarchical structures and criticism of the classic aristotelian narrative is also a part of this course. The student will also be learning the necessary software that enables multimedia material structuring. Analysis and theoretical reflection around examples and the studenets' own work will also be emphasized.

Learning outcome

Knowledge At the end of this course, the student will have learned about different narrative methods and genres, as well as be able to reflect and criticize his own and other people's work. The student will understand how one can use various audiovisual tools in different ways and recognize these tools' expressive strengths and weaknesses. 

Skills The student should be able to apply his knowledge through practice and develop his craft further within the fields of photography/cinematography, lighting, composition, editing, and sound design. The student should be able to solve narrative challenges, and develop their artistic expression further.

General competence After completing the course, the student will have acquired a theoretical and a practical knowledge and understanding of the audiovisual storytelling subject. In addition, the student will have learned to work in a team and relate professionally to his/her professional task.

Method of work

Lectures and workshops. Seminar based learning.

The students should be aware that subject matters discussed in the classroom and in workshops are also relevant subjects for the final exam and that the assessment of this course is based on the student's portfolio.

The students should also be aware that this is a time-consuming study. Therefore it might be difficult to combine studying with work.
