Content
Review of key geology topics relevant for the research work in different aspects of geology and for the group of students taking the course.
- The scientific method
- How to define a research project
- How to write scientific articles, proposals, etc
- How to make and present scientific/technical presentations
- Best practices to conduct research
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- Knowledge on how to apply the scientific method and approach a geological problem
- Knowledge on how to search and collect information necessary to develop a thesis/research project
- Background on all aspects of geology and related fields that are necessary in order to develop/solve a geological problem
Skills:
- Have research and knowledge skills on how to establish a geologic related problem for a thesis project.
-To propose strategies for the exploration and production of hydrocarbons together with other engineering areas.
General competence:
- Write proposals to define a scientific problem and be able to communicate effectively in a written and oral form
-Define time frames and responsibilities in the definition of professional problems that may apply to real life cases.

The assessment of the course consists of portfolio assessment. The folder contains:
A written report, that counts for 50% and an oral presentation counts for 50%.
Both must be passed. The instructor sets the final grade.

Course participation as it requires:
- Lectures that are relevant to develop the scientific problem for the thesis project, proposal and presentation
- May include training of computer skills and application of concepts in the lab.
- Attendance at guest lecturers from the scientific and industry community presenting on topics relevant to geological problems. Participation will be taken into account and failure to attend guest presentations and project presentations will affect the grade
- Students will be introduced to the different faculty and staff, who will postulate different problems for thesis projects, etc.
