Some students prefer to take a whole semester (30 ECTS) abroad. In such cases the course Comparative Educational Studies is extended with practice related work (teaching practice and/ or fieldwork, observations etc) and a report equivalent to a total of 10 ECTS.

This module offers students the possibility to experience and inquire educational work (preschool, primary or lower secondary school) in a Norwegian context.

Learning outcome

After finishing this module the student will
  • be able to collaborate  in a European team of teachers
  • be able to describe and reflect on educational features in a comparative perspective
  • have knowledge about the learning environment and teaching approaches in kindergarten, primary or lower secondary schools  in Norway

All students submit one written assignment of 2500 - 3000 words. This assignment will be evaluated by internal sensor and assessed on a scale from A-F, where A-E denotes pass and F denotes fail. The grade achieved will be the final assessment.  

The Course COMPARATIVE EDUCATIONAL STUDIES (20 or 30 ECTS) will be offered in spring semester at the University of Stavanger, Faculty of Arts and Education, N 4036 Stavanger, Norway

Method of work

This module starts after students have completed the 20 ECTS course. The placement in schools or early childhood settings lasts 20 days[MAR1] , The students will be placed in a nursery, primary or secondary school in accordance with the focus of their training requirements. Language skills will also be considered.  There will be offered placements where students can use both English and Norwegian language. The kind of work during the placement will differ from teaching practice to observations and other kinds of field work.

When the student is not teaching his or her own lessons, (s) he is expected to work with the teachers, assisting small groups or individual children. During the placement the student is also expected to contribute to the life of the school in general.

The students will get supervision from their mentor at the placement. In addition there will be arranged seminars at the University College in which they can reflect and analyse their learning experiences in the classroom/nursery. These seminars, leaded by a tutor, also prepare students for writing the final assignment. This assignment can be a research report / a personal memoir of teaching experiences / or article.
