Content

Water chemistry introduces the principles and applications for chemical equilibrium in aquatic systems. The course includes weak and strong single- and multiple acid- and base systems, including calculations on such complex systems. Titration curves and buffer properties will be discussed. The equilibrium between gas and liquid phase for CO2 will be included. The equilibrium between metals selected complex formers will be discussed. Also, a brief introduction to colloid chemistry is included.

Learning outcome

After passing this course the students should be able to:

  • understand general topics as acid and base reactions, precipitation/dissolution and complexing
  • understand basic analytical methods used in water chemistry (eg. for pH, conductivity & alkalinity)
  • understand the carbonate buffer system, and the impact for aquatic chemistry in general
  • understand effects of speciation on availability and toxicity of selected ions

Emneevaluering

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
